A few short years ago I would walk into the tackle store, pick up whatever local jig I found available on the shelves, buy them in a color that might work, then head for the lake to try my hand at catching a bass. Considering the products that were available and the color selections on hand, it’s a wonder I ever fooled a fish! In recent years the online tackle industry has exploded! This transition has allowed the bass fisherman to search nation, and sometimes worldwide for the best products available.
It was through this online search process several years ago that I came across Dirty Jigs. At the time they were a very small garage company that I never would have found on my own. As I began trying the products I was blown away by what I found! This company quite literally, had a jig for every situation that I encountered. From the smallest of finesse footballs, to the largest of heavy grass jigs, every niche was filled. The “Tour Level” series of products stood a cut above the rest. The skirts on the Tour Level lines of products featured a minimum of seven colors! The heads themselves featured a minimum of three colors! I had never seen jigs with such attention to detail.
There was no question that these products stood apart from what was available to me locally but the question still remained, is it overkill? Do I really need a jig with this much detail? These questions did not receive an immediate answer. It wasn’t until I had the product in hand, saw it in the water, and began to see the changes in my fishing that I knew what I’d discovered! Having a variety of colors in every skirt allowed the bait to have an almost chameleon, color changing effect in the water. My jigs no longer looked like a solid mass sitting on the bottom, with every bump of the jig the skirt would come to life, flashing a myriad of colors and truly looking alive!
After the first season with the products I went back through my journals and cataloged the fish I had caught. The numbers were staggering! There was no question that the jigs had improved my fishing. I was not only catching more jig fish, but the number of big fish caught on the jig had increased dramatically as well! Three models of jigs stood out from the line up after that first season. The No-Jack Grass Jig, The Pitchin’ Jig, and The Skirted Football Jig, had each found a permanent place on the deck of my boat. Each of these jigs fit a specific niche in my arsenal.
The No-Jack Grass Jig has what I believe to be one of the strongest hooks available in any jig on the market! It is advertised as having a “10x hook” and I believe it! This jig excels both day and night. I’ve used it for everything from day time flipping to night time ledge busting with great results! This jig allows me to fish with extremely heavy line and heavy action rods and not worry about the hook straightening out on a big fish. One application for this jig you may not think of is to swim it! Common knowledge with a swim jig is to fish a light wire hook with a thin weedguard. I’m here to tell you that whoever came up with that idea did not fish the big bass waters of California! Out here I swim the No-Jack Grass Jig on heavy line in thick vegetation and have been catching some amazing fish!
The Pitchin’ Jig is probably the most versatile jig in the line. When you’re fishing a variety of conditions and structures nothing beats the arkie-style head. This head allows the jig to come through rip rap, wood, and tullies with ease. Match that head to an awesome skirt keeper and an oversized hook and you’ve got a package that just won’t quit. This jig has put a staggering number of fish in the boat for me on the Northern California reservoir and river systems that I call home.
Historically, football jigs were used when I needed to catch “limit fish”. Weigh in was just around the corner and I needed another fish to fill out the limit, so I’d reach for the football jig in hopes of a better than average keeper. That all changed when I found the Dirty Jigs Skirted Football Jig. The jig had a stout hook, what a concept! It shines when fishing the foothill reservoirs. I am now able to fish a football head without the fear of straightening out a light wire hook on a big bass.
Every time a fellow fisherman begins applying Dirty Jigs to their fishing routine I sit back and wait to hear as they make the same discovery I did. The attention to detail, first class components, and amazing colors, absolutely affect the number of fish that end up in the boat. Remember, you can catch a keeper on just about anything. Even a kicker fish can be easily fooled under the right conditions. But it takes a perfect bait with the perfect presentation to fool a kicker when the time isn’t right and you still need to go to weigh in.
